James or JAS Shoolbred & Company, established in 1820’s and was originally a drapers and later a Department store on Tottenham Court Road, London.
In the late 1860s to early 1870s they began designing, manufacturing and selling high quality furniture, the sophisticated designs referencing Regency Aesthetics with Greek and Roman influences.
The company regularly produced sales catalogues with guides for the Victorian home owner to design their own rooms and were given a Royal Warrant in the mid 1880’s and eventually ceased trading in 1931.

In As Found Slightly Faded Condition, The Rush Seats Functional But Beginning To Show Signs Of Use, The Frames Nice And Firm, Totally Functional, A Pair Of Chairs For The Connoisseur. The Furniture History Society Has This To Say About The Firm: London; upholsterers, cabinet and chair makers (fl.1879-1905) John Finch worked as a departmental manager for Messrs. W. & J. R. Hunter. On their retirement in 1879 he opened his own business at 45 City Road. An article in The Furniture Gazette on 5 July 1879 said the new establishment would operate on a cash basis and the furniture would be designed by W. Fairbanks for ‘guaranteed good, artistic style’.
Finch & Company advertised in The Furniture Gazette, 12 July 1879 and in the same publication, 1879-1888, recorded commissions including:
The Broadway House, Hammersmith for the Fulham Board of Works, 2 August 1879 The Town Hall, Kensington, 21 August 1880 The Town Hall, Great Yarmouth, 4 March 1882 The Town Hall, Bermondsey, 1 April 1882 The Alliance Bank, Regent Street, 8 December 1883 The infirmary at St John’s Hill for the Guardians of the Wandsworth & Clapham Union, 1 January 1888 The firm also supplied a set of over 100 walnut turned chairs with leather upholstered seats to the Tallow Chandlers' Hall, London, at the turn of the twentieth century. The set remains in situ.

The Furniture & History Society Have A Bit To Say About The Firm Including: The firm furnished the reception rooms and reading room for the British Commissioners for the World’s Fair at Vienna in 1873 and received a medal [The Furniture Gazette, 19 July 1873]. At the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition 1876, they exhibited ‘Queen Anne’ and other furniture including an aesthetic style cabinet (illus. Meyer (2006), p. 213), and also supplied ‘Sideboards, Dining and other Tables’ together with ‘Cabinets, the Carved Oak and Walnut Mantel Pieces and fittings for the Offices and Staff Quarters’ of the British Section.
