Alan McGregor Peart, DFC (25 July 1922 – 5 September 2018) was a New Zealand fighter pilot (Spitfires and others) and flying ace of the Second World War. He served in Europe with No. 610 Squadron, and with No. 81 Squadron in North Africa, Malta, Sicily, Italy and the Far East and is credited with the destruction of six enemy aircraft, plus a share in another aircraft destroyed. He is also notable for having shot down aircraft from all three main Axis powers - Germany, Italy & Japan.

Fossil ivory is found mostly in Siberia around the Lena River, and other rivers that drain into the Arctic Ocean. It is the semi fossilized remains of ancient elephant or ‘woolly mammoth’ (elephas primigenius) tusks and teeth,, which were frozen during the pleistocene era, 200,000 years ago.

Iain MacNab was educated in Edinburgh before studying at Glasgow School of Art and then Heatherley’s School of Art. He was the principal founder of The Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Macnab was an excllent draughtsman and his talents included wood engraving, linocut, lithography and painting. Iain Macnab tried to show the importance of the 'rhythm' of a composition, and the now so collectable Grosvenor School linocuts are based on that rhythm. MacNab's ideas are seen in the work of the teachers whom he gathered together at his school - among them Claude Flight,
Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews. His first exhibited woodcuts date from
1927 and he exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Royal Scottish Academy,
The Royal Glasgow Institute and The Royal Institute of Painters in Oil.
His work can be found in the permanent collections of the V & A, the British Museum,
the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art And Te Papa.

The Perfect Relic For A Gentleman's Library:

 A Carved Oak Urn With Domed Cover On Square Base With Gilt Metal Pineapple Finial And Rococo Scrollwork Handles With Satyr Mask Terminals, The Base With A Brass Plaque Engraved Thus: "MADE OF WOOD AND METAL FROM THE ROYAL GEORGE SUNK AT SPITHEAD IN AUGUST 1782 RECOVERED IN THE COURSE OF MAJOR GENERAL PASLEY'S OPERATIONS AGAINST THE WRECK IN 1842 BY THE USE OF A SIEBES DIVING APPARATUS."

Good Condition, A Few Shrinkage Cracks Here And There, Nothing To Worry About - Just Signs Of Age Consistent With Venerable Aspect, Too Fabulous For Words.

Christian Augustus Siebe was a German-educated inventor and gifted engineer who emigrated to London and founded his own company in 1819. Siebe had the engineering skills to build helmets for the Deane brothers. He improved upon the basic design of the Deane helmet using 12 equally spaced bolts and brass-straps to provide a watertight connection to a diving suit. He also engineered a neck ring with an ‘interrupted’ thread which made it possible to separate the bonnet from the breastplate quickly and easily. These improvements brought Siebe worldwide recognition as the engineer who invented, developed and manufactured the flexible ‘closed’ diving dress. The initial Deane helmet was little more than an open ‘bucket‘ carried on the divers shoulders which would flood with water when the diver bent over too far. However, after Siebe’s final improvements it was impossible for water to enter the helmet ‘dress’ no matter what position the diver assumed.

An Askos is the traditional ancient Greek term for a wine skin referring to a sack of leather that contained the wine for pouring at festivities. Many ancient examples exist in fine pottery. The Victorians liked to make them in sterling silver.
