Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English silver and certainly the most important in silver plate. They began life in Birmingham as a company of silversmiths in 1836, and experimented with improving gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. By 1840 production was already underway with silver electroplated wares. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success.

A proprietary spicy liquid condiment sauce. A 'rotten fish' sauce - based on anchovies - Harvey's seems to have originated the use of bright orange as a label colour for such sauces, still seen on Watkin's, Henderson's and most brands of Worcester.

It is said to have been invented in 1760 by Peter Harvey, owner of the Black Dog Inn in Bedfont, Middlesex, in imitation of a sauce devised by the mother of Captain Charles Combers (qv), one of his customers. A certain London grocer, M. Lazenby, offered to buy the rights to it but was refused. Lazenby later married married Harvey's sister, Elizabeth, and as a wedding present, Peter Harvey gave Elizabeth the recipe.

Mappin & Webb Website States

Mappin & Webb is a true British treasure with over 241 years of tradition and historical significance in the world of silver and jewellery. Renowned for combining timeless craftsmanship with superior quality and contemporary design, for over two centuries we have produced exquisite jewellery, elegant silverware, watches, glassware and the unique lifestyle accessories that have long been at the heart of affluent British society.

It's a story that began in 1775, when Jonathan Mappin opened a silver workshop in Sheffield with a vision to create the most beautifully crafted silverware. It would see the company expand internationally, receive royal warrants and commissions from Monarchs around the world, and become synonymous with excellence, craftsmanship and all things truly greatly British.

Illustrious clients throughout the decades include Queen of France Marie Antoinette, the last Czar of Russia Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Charles Dickens, Harry Houdini and Grace Kelly. Part celebration, part exploration, it is a renewed expression of the spirit of discovery that has driven Mappin & Webb for the last two centuries.

As Lifted From Camusso Web Site

"In 1933, Mr. Carlo Mario Camusso established in Lima, Peru a small silversmith workshop, thus laying the corner-stone of what along time would turn to be a well establishe company with international renown. Later, in 1946, the one person workshop became a stock company. Since then the company always kept a unique spirit of unity, enthusism and permanent dedication among its executive members, employees and workers. Their collaboration made out of the founder's dream a today's reality. On the other hand, three consecutive generations of the Camusso Family who took charge of the management always kept one common denominator as key for success: "Transform Silver in Art". This is how Camusso has become synonym of great and reliable warranty of the Sterling mark stamped on each of 3500 silver products. Carlo Mario Camusso S.A. manufactures more than 3500 products which vary from flatware, tea sets, platters, ornaments for commemorations and anniversaries - events which may deserve to be heightened with Sterling Silver."
