Hall Thorpe, Australian, 1874-1947.
A Coloured Art Deco Woodblock Print Of Orange And Yellow Marigolds With A Ladybird In A Green Vase.
245mm x 300mm
Signed In Pencil Bottom Right, Additional Printed Copyright Information Centre Dated 1925.

John Hall Thorpe (29 April 1874 – 8 October 1947), invariably known as Hall Thorpe, was an Australian artist who achieved considerable success in England with his decorative prints of flowers, fruit and landscapes.
Thorpe was born in Sandridge, Victoria and when quite young the family moved to New South Wales, finally settled in Sydney, where he was educated at St John's Grammar School, Parramatta. He studied at the Society of Arts and was briefly employed at the Illustrated Sydney News. He learned the trade or craft of woodblock engraving as an apprentice on John Fairfax's Sydney Mail from 1891. When zinc replaced wood as the engraving medium, he became a staff artist, succeeding Norman Hardy as their principal artist in 1897.He was a member of the (Sydney) Society of Artists, and showed successfully alongside the likes of G. W. Lambert, Sid Long, Dattilo-Rubbo, J. S. Watkins, Edith Loudon, Mildred Rivett, Tom Roberts, W. F. Hughes, C. Lloyd Jones and Howard Ashton.

In 1898 he had several paintings shown at the Grafton Galleries' "Exhibition of Australian Art" in London, and in May 1900 left for England, his position on the Mail having become tenuous with the advent of photo-engraving.He attended Heatherley’s School of Art and developed a distinctive style of colored woodcut prints. He exhibited at the Royal Academy's Colonial Exhibition in 1906 alongside Arthur Streeton, G. W. Lambert, Albert Tucker, Edith Lumley and Hayley Lever. A breakthrough came when he received a favorable notice from eminent critic M. Camille Mauclair. Around this time he changed direction and resuscitated his hard-won skills as a woodblock engraver, producing the large, bold bright colorful prints for which he became famous. One of these, A Country Bunch, at 25 by 30 inches (64 by 76 cm) was possibly the largest woodblock color art print ever published. He took control of the whole process; engraving, printing and publishing from his studio at 36 Redcliffe Square, and gallery at 32 Sussex Place, South Kensington, and the results found their way into many homes on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as art collections of the Contemporary Art Society, British Royalty, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The response to his designs could by summarised by a couple of American critics:

"They are not great works of art; they are intimate pictures. They sing out from a white wall, recalling a walk through a garden or a day with Nature" and "His work is consistent in its dignity, its strength, and its happy related colour ... He is never abstruse nor exaggerated, but he emphasises the grace of forms and the joyousness of pure fresh colour."

Thorpe became a household name in the field of home decoration and was a strong influence on fashions in wallpaper design. Over time his work fell out of fashion but a revival from the 1980s has renewed interest in his work.

He caught pneumonia and died at Bexhill-on-Sea in 1947.

The British Museum said it supported any efforts to protect elephants and to curb the illegal trade and export of ivory, but stressed this should not include antiques.

"There is no public benefit in restricting the display or movement of ivory works of art made before 1947 and legislation should not extend to cover actions carried out before that date," a spokesman said.

Captain William Jackson Barry was a most colourful 19thC character who was born in England, shipped to Australia as a child convict about 1829, pursued a vast range of adventurous occupations including bank robber, bush ranger, whaler, auctioneer and trader before becoming a butcher and mayor of Cromwell, Otago, in 1866. In later years he lectured extensively throughout Australasia and Britain, telling tales of his adventurous youth. He wrote three books and it is said of his writing in the Encyclopedia of New Zealand "Lively, funny and dramatic, the writing succeeds in recreating a world of swashbuckling adventure and in making the author-hero into a legend larger than life". Elsewhere "He was friendly, humorous, justice loving, and generally well liked - and was undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest literary liar".

The Longer I Participate In This Business The More I Have Come To Appreciate Originality. Please Do Not Attempt To Clean This Item. Grime Is Good.

The company was founded by Archibald Kenrick I (1760 - 1835) and is one of the largest family firms still operating in the West Midlands. The family is one of three Unitarian dynasties, along with the Martineaus and the Chamberlains, which had great influence over Birmingham affairs into the twentieth century. Archibald Kenrick I moved to Birmingham from Ruabon in Denbighshire, around 1780. After an apprenticeship in the iron trade he set up as a manufacturer of buckles with the backing of other Unitarian businessmen. When the buckle trade was wiped out by the introduction of the shoelace in the 1790s, Kenrick began manufacturing cast iron products at West Bromwich, erecting a foundry and workshop next to the Birmingham Canal, where the firm is still based.

The firm came to specialise in cast iron kitchen hollow-ware, which became its mainstay for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its prosperity was helped by a series of patented technical improvements, and the organisation of a cartel among the UK's hardware manufacturers, which set prices and protected market share. By the First World War the company became one of the Black Country's leading metal manufacturers. The interwar years were difficult, but in the 1950s, Kenricks acquired the manufacturing rights to the Shepherd castor for furniture, the market leader. This was to be crucial to the firm's prosperity in the 1960s and 70s.

“THE LION TAMER”, 1908 FOUNDATION STATUE FOR THE SHIKAR CLUB.

During the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century, a number of organisations were marshalled to protect, encourage or celebrate the killing of wildlife for sport. One such association, The Shikar Club, symbolised the virility of British imperial big-game hunting. This is a cast stone example of the very rare “Lion Tamer”, having a central bronze disc with high relief wording “THE SHIKAR CLUB, PINCHINTHORPE, CLEVELAND 1908”, a classical semi-nude gladiator releasing two tigers from their cage, with classical swags and urns.

Conceived in plaster in 1907 and executed by Shikar Club member, J. G. Millais at the Eppleton Studio it was later cast in iron and stone by the Pease of Darlington’s Whessoe Foundry Company in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Sir Alfred E. Pease first commissioned this example for his lakeside grotto at his estate in Guisborough. Another larger example, in bronze, remained for many years at the Duke of Beaufort’s stately home in Badminton and the famous big game hunter Frederick Courtney Selous, a fellow Shikar Club member, displayed his on the main gates of his Surrey Estate.

THE PEASE FAMILY EAGLE

This finely carved eagle is a symbol of the Pease family and is known to have been at Stanhope Castle, home of Henry Pease, since 1850. A small cupboard is built into the heavily carved base. It bears John William Pease’s monogram engraved in brass. The gold leaf finish remains in part, but storage conditions have helped wash much from it’s surface.

John William Pease founded, with his brother in law, Thomas Hodgkin, the Newcastle Banking House of Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease, Spence & Co and the large eagle graced the entrance to the bank in St Nicholas Square, for decades. In 1900 the bank was sued by Beatrice Mary Pease, married to the Earl of Portsmouth. The bank lost the lawsuit regarding Beatrice’s mismanaged family shares and inheritance and was ordered to pay some £500,000 plus costs. This would bankrupt the bank and it was forced to become part of Lloyds bank in 1902.

The eagle and other cherished pieces of their family history were stored in the hayloft of a stable block at the Pease Railway Station Zetland Hotel until much of the Pease collection was passed to Sir Charles Cheers Wakefield, Lord Mayor of London and stored at Bishop and Sons depository at Edbury, SW1.
